Retirement is around the corner…or is it?

Retirement with a plan

Some people work hard at being busy all their life, filling available time with contracts, sales, clients, products, mortgages, family and children…and then they hit retirement. An empty nest, potential loss of income and quite possibly 20 or more years of this ahead. As retirement nears, how well we have planned for this next phase will determine how comfortable we will be.

Here’s the thing about retirement. These days, we can safely assume a reasonable level of health well into our 70s and increasingly into our 80s. In fact, many of us can expect more than 20 years in retirement.

Retirement is not the end. It needs to be viewed as a new phase of life. This phase, if planned and actioned at the right time, gives you the opportunity to lead a rich and fulfilling life over the next two decades or more.

Retirement now!

Panic can be the initial reaction to the realisation that retirement is now visible on the horizon. Not engaging with it early enough often means that for some, retirement planning is left to the last moment.

This can significantly reduce your ability to create the wealth needed for a comfortable retirement. With the average life expectancy in Australia now 85 years (OECD, 2014), many people may simply not be in a position to finance their retirement using superannuation alone. According to the latest Intergenerational Report released by the Australian Government, the median account balance for a person aged 60 or over in the accumulation phase is around $95,000.

Key insight

Our view is that retirement should be seen as an opportunity to start thinking of the next chapter in your life. Generating enough funds to live comfortably for 20 years or more may seem challenging but it is possible with forward planning. At Advantage First, we incorporate retirement planning as part of a holistic view of your financial strategy for life.
